Tips and plain talk

What should you do the day you move in? How do you know if a lock is worth keeping? Why does your car key work some days and not others? These notes answer the questions that come up again and again, in enough detail to be useful and no more.

Let's clear a few things up

Lockout Services

I rent my place. Can I call a locksmith myself?

Yes. A tenant locked out of their own unit can arrange entry directly, and the identification check is the same: something that ties you to the address, such as a lease, a bill or a piece of mail, plus photo identification. Where you may want to involve your landlord is any change to the lock afterwards, because tenancy rules in this province expect landlords and tenants to agree on lock changes and to share keys. A locksmith can note what was done for the building manager. Home Lockout Service

An employee left and never returned their keys. Should we rekey?

It is the sensible step, and a lockout visit is a convenient moment for it. Rekeying keeps your existing cylinders and changes the pins so a new key operates them and the unreturned one does nothing. If your doors use interchangeable cores, swapping the core takes minutes. Bring every door that shared the old key onto the new one, count the fresh keys into named hands and start a register so the next departure is a line in a book rather than a call. Can you extract a key from a padlock, mailbox or filing cabinet?

Yes. Small cylinders in padlocks, mailboxes, desk drawers, filing cabinets and cam locks on lockers hold a fragment the same way a door does, and the same slim hooks and spirals fit them. Their keyways are narrower, so it is finer work. Where a padlock is not worth saving, the locksmith will say so and offer a cut-off and a new padlock keyed to your preference instead. Broken Key Extraction

Can a split jamb be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Many can be repaired. A split along the grain is pressed back together, glued with a two-part wood epoxy and held by a steel repair plate or a boxed strike screwed through it into the stud, so the fasteners reinforce the repair as well as the lock. Missing wood is built up with filler or a fitted piece. A jamb that has pulled off the framing along its length or shattered around the pocket is replaced by a carpenter, with the opening secured until then. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

My house is older and has a mortise lock. Can that be rekeyed?

Yes. A mortise lock, the kind with a large case set into the edge of the door, uses a threaded cylinder held by a set screw reached from the door's edge. The cylinder unthreads, is pinned like any other and screws back in. Where a very old lock uses a bit key or a lever mechanism instead of a pin cylinder, the locksmith will explain the options, which may include fitting a modern cylinder into the existing case so the door keeps its original hardware. Lock Rekeying

How long should the bolt be?

The bolt should extend at least 25 mm into the frame, which is the standard throw for a dwelling's entrance doors and the length most residential deadbolts provide. Part of the bolt stays inside the door for support while the rest sits in the pocket. A hardened steel insert that spins under a saw blade is a common feature worth having on doors that face a street or laneway. Deadbolt Installation

Can every door in the house work from one key?

Yes, provided the cylinders share a compatible keyway, which the locksmith checks when choosing hardware. New cylinders are pinned on site to a single new key and any existing locks worth keeping are repinned to match. Front, back, side and garage doors commonly end up on one key, and a shed or gate padlock can join them. You then decide how many copies exist and who holds each. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The lock works with the door open but not when it is closed. Is the lock broken?

Almost certainly not. That pattern means the door has moved in its frame so the latch and bolt no longer meet the strike squarely. Solid wood doors in older houses swell in humid weather and settle on their hinges over the years. The service adjusts or shims the strike and tightens or packs the hinges so the bolt throws without lifting the door, and the lock itself is usually cleaned and lubricated at the same time. High Security Locks

I bought the safe secondhand and have no idea of the combination. Can it still be opened?

Yes. A safe with no known history is treated as an unknown from the start: the locksmith identifies the make, model and lock type directly from the hardware and works through the same manipulation, decoding or reset options used on any other safe. Proof of the purchase or transfer establishes your authority to have it opened, and the process afterward does not depend on any prior record existing. Safe Opening & Combination Change

Will you service a safe that another company installed?

Yes, servicing does not depend on who did the original installation. The locksmith opens the bolt-work, tests the lock through a full cycle, checks the anchoring underneath, and replaces batteries in an electronic lock as needed, regardless of the brand or who fitted it originally. Not knowing the history of the unit just means a slightly more thorough first look before any work begins. Safe Installation & Servicing

How long does the installation take?

A cylinder swap with new keys on one door is a short visit. A new deadbolt, reinforced strike and frame repair takes longer, and several doors keyed to a plan take longer again, mostly in bench time pinning cylinders. The locksmith gives you a realistic estimate once the doors have been looked at, because the frame condition and the door preparation matter more than the count of locks alone. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

What condition does a lock need to be in to be rekeyed?

It needs a plug that rotates without catching, pins that return under their springs, and a face free of heavy corrosion or cracks. Most commercial cylinders in daily use pass easily. Ones that are stiff, gritty or green with salt bloom can sometimes be cleaned and repinned, and the locksmith will say when a replacement for that door is the better value; the rest of the doors are rekeyed regardless. Commercial Rekeying

Can my existing locks be used, or do I need all new hardware?

Many existing cylinders can join a new hierarchy as they are, once their keyway and condition are confirmed compatible. Others, particularly older or mismatched hardware, are replaced so the whole system pins cleanly without cross-keying. The assessment identifies which doors fall into each group before any work begins, so the plan reflects what is actually on the property rather than assuming everything needs to change. Master Key System Design

What credential types are available: cards, codes, fobs, phones?

A proximity card or fob held near a reader, a code typed on a keypad, or a mobile credential read from a phone are all in common use, and a single building can mix them by door or by person. Cards and fobs are simple to issue and switch off individually; a keypad needs no card to lose but a shared code eventually gets passed around; a mobile credential ties entry to a device the person already carries. Access Control Installation

Does a retrofit into an older building work the same way as new construction?

The device and trim choices are the same, but a retrofit usually has to work with a door and frame that already carry someone else's old hardware preparation. Reading what holes and reinforcement already exist, and choosing a device that can use or cleanly replace them, is a bigger part of a retrofit than of a new opening built with the hardware in mind from the start. Car Keys

I am on the shoulder of the highway. Is it safe for you to work there?

It can be, with the routine stranded drivers are given: hazard lights on, out of the driving lanes, and nobody standing on the traffic side. The locksmith parks behind the car as a shield, works from the side away from traffic, and asks you to wait somewhere safe. If the shoulder is too narrow or the traffic too heavy, moving the car a short way to the next exit or lot by tow may be the better order of things. Car Lockout Service

Will I get a written estimate before the work starts?

You should expect one. Consumer rules for motor vehicle repair work in this province call for a written estimate before any charge and for your authorization of the work, and a good locksmith works that way as a matter of course. The estimate names what is being supplied: the blank or fob, the cutting, the programming, any erasing of old keys and the number of keys, so you can see the parts of the job before agreeing. Car Key Replacement

Is there a reason to make a spare now rather than waiting until the original is lost?

The whole process depends on having a working key to read or trace from, so making the spare while that key still exists is simpler than the alternative of proving ownership without any key present and building access from scratch. A spare made now also means a future lost key is solved by reaching for the second one already tested and waiting, rather than starting the whole process from nothing. Spare Car Key Duplication

Do all vehicles support passive or proximity entry programming?

No. Passive entry depends on the vehicle being built with the receivers and hardware for it in the first place, not just on the fob being programmed correctly. A vehicle with a basic remote-and-blade key system has no passive entry to program, no matter which fob is registered to it, so the vehicle's own equipment sets the ceiling on what programming can offer.
