Smart Lock Installation

Arthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.

In plain words

The first decision is which kind of smart lock suits the door and the household. A keypad deadbolt that keeps the existing keyway is the simplest swap and keeps a familiar key as backup. A lock that talks to your phone over Bluetooth works when you are standing at the door; adding Wi-Fi or a small bridge lets you check and change it from anywhere. Some models bolt onto the inside of the door and turn the deadbolt you already have, so the outside is untouched. A locksmith matches these choices to the door's thickness, how it hangs and the network strength at the entrance.

The call
The kids get home before you do and the spare key has been lost twice this school year. A keypad they can tap, plus a message to your phone when the door opens, would take a daily worry off the list.

How the visit goes

Person in safety glasses holding a small metal lock cylinder beside a workbench with a red cloth and an open car door.
  1. Scene 1

Will the bolt travel on its own?

The most important test takes moments and uses no tools. With the door closed and nobody touching it, the locksmith turns the existing thumb-turn with two fingers and feels whether the bolt glides into the strike or has to be forced. A motor has less strength than a hand, so any drag here is drag the smart lock will fight every day until its batteries give out. Hinges that have let the door drop, a strike pocket that is shallow or off-centre, and weatherstrip that pushes the door out of square are the usual culprits, and each is something the locksmith can correct before the new hardware goes on.

  2. Scene 2

Retrofit locks that keep your outside hardware

Some smart locks mount only on the inside of the door and turn the deadbolt you already own, leaving the exterior face and the keyway as they were. Fitting one begins by checking that the existing deadbolt is on the model's compatibility list and that its tailpiece shape matches an adapter in the box. The interior thumb-turn is removed, the adapter fitted, and the motor unit clamped to the mounting plate so it sits square and turns the bolt through its full travel without slipping. Because the outside is untouched, these suit rented units where the landlord prefers the door unchanged, and older doors whose exterior hardware is worth keeping. The existing key keeps working alongside the phone.

  3. Scene 3

A cleaner handover at the next turnover

For a rental or a shared home, the real payoff arrives at the next change of occupant. Instead of collecting keys and wondering about copies, you delete the departing tenant's code, add one for the incoming tenant and confirm the change in the app. The small register the locksmith helped you start shows who still has access and which codes are due to expire. Any guest, cleaner or contractor codes that belong to the old arrangement go at the same time. The override key stays under your control and is handed over or rekeyed as the tenancy rules and your own preference require, so the door changes hands with nothing left behind.

What shapes the quoteSteeles Corners Locksmith Services

Removing an old mortise or non-standard lock
Older doors sometimes carry a mortise case or a lock with an unusual footprint. Filling the pocket, plugging holes and re-drilling to the standard preparation is careful joinery, and it is quoted as preparation.
Number of doors
A single front door is the base case. Adding the back door, the garage entry or a side door, whether each gets its own smart lock or is rekeyed to match the override key, extends the visit accordingly.
Finish and matching hardware
Standard finishes are the base. A less common finish, or replacing the knob or lever at the same time so the door matches, adds to the hardware portion of the quote.

Let's clear a few things up

Do I need a hub or a bridge?

Only if the model you choose uses one to reach the internet. Some locks have Wi-Fi built into the interior unit and connect straight to your router. Others save battery by using Bluetooth at the door and a small plug-in bridge nearby to relay to the network. Locks designed for a home hub join whatever hub you already run. The locksmith checks signal strength at the door itself and recommends the arrangement that keeps the lock reliably connected.

What is the difference between a keypad lock, a Bluetooth lock and a Wi-Fi lock?

A keypad lock is operated at the door by code and needs no phone at all. A Bluetooth lock adds phone control when you are within a few metres, which covers most daily use and keeps the lock off the internet. A Wi-Fi lock, either built in or through a small bridge, lets you check and change the lock from anywhere and sends alerts, at the cost of more battery use and a dependence on the home network. Many models combine two of these.

Do I still get a key?

In most cases, yes. The majority of keypad deadbolts keep a conventional cylinder behind or beside the keypad, and the locksmith rekeys it during the visit so a fresh key works and the old one is retired. A few designs have no keyway at all and rely on the keypad plus an emergency power contact instead. Which you prefer is part of choosing the model, and either way the fallback route is tested before the locksmith leaves.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 8 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 8% of homes in Vaughan were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In newer developments the hardware is often the same finish and style from house to house. A locksmith can offer upgrades that match what is already there, so a stronger cylinder or a new lever set fits in without looking like an afterthought.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 63% of homes in Vaughan (2021 Census).Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.
